Some are harmless. Some escalate quickly. And some are the stories you’re still telling years later.

Kelby, Mike and Chris are joined by KT for a conversation about how much the tile trade has changed as materials have gotten bigger — and how the stakes have grown right along with them.

From 12×12 tile to long planks, large-format tile and massive panels, bigger material has changed the way installers handle layout, cutting, setting, tools and preparation. The crew talks about the surprises that come with those changes, why mistakes can get expensive fast, and how better products, training and communication have helped the trade keep up.

This is The Old Fashioned Tradesmen + KT — and you may be hearing more from her in future episodes.

Wet saws, tile cutters, and a little whiskey-fueled shop talk.

In Episode 5 of The Old Fashioned Tradesmen, Mike, Chris, and Kelby take a look at tile cutting tools past and present—from the wet saws we all grew up using to the cutters and equipment changing how the job gets done today.

Along the way, we talk about what worked, what didn’t, what we still swear by, and how the tools of the trade have evolved over the years.

And of course, no episode would be complete without Story Time with Magic Mike, where the conversation takes the kind of turn you probably won’t find in an instruction manual.

Red Chalk & Laser Beams: Tile Layout Tools, Tricks & Mistakes

SCHEDULED RELEASEDec 14, 2026, 5:30 PM CENTRAL

In “Red Chalk & Laser Beams,” the guys take a look at how tile layout has changed over the years—from tape measures, framing squares, red chalk lines and hand-built grids to lasers, large-format tile and today’s modern layout tools. Along the way, they get into visual centering, avoiding ugly sliver cuts, working around walls that are never quite square, laying out patterned and large-format tile, spacers, old-school tricks, and why even a perfectly straight laser line can still lead to a bad layout.

As usual, the technical talk comes with plenty of jobsite stories, hard-earned lessons, a few layout mistakes from years past, and an Uncle Mike story that proves some things look great on paper until a tradesman actually has to make them work in the real world.

If you install tile, work in the trades, or just appreciate the difference between straight, square, and actually right, this one’s for you.

What’s the fastest way to make another trade hate working with you? Walk across their fresh tile, unplug their tools, or leave your mess for them to clean up. Kelby, Mike and Chris talk jobsite etiquette—the everyday habits that make you someone people want to work around, or someone they dread seeing pull into the driveway.

From muddy boots and paint-covered tools to protecting finished work and cleaning up before heading home, the guys trade pet peeves and stories from both residential and commercial jobs. They also get into who to call when something goes wrong, phones on the clock, and whether crews looked out for each other more in the old days. Nobody’s pretending they’ve always handled it perfectly.

Uncle Mike closes things out with a story about working a little too close to a coworker after a night of draft beer. Consider it one more lesson in respecting the people around you.

What’s Behind the Job? | The Problems You Can’t Afford to Cover Up

SCHEDULED RELEASEJan 18, 2027, 5:30 PM CENTRAL

The finished work might be what everybody sees — but what’s underneath it can make or break the entire job.

Full episode description

The finished work might be what everybody sees — but what’s underneath it can make or break the entire job.

In Episode 8 of The Old Fashioned Tradesmen, we get into the problems hiding behind the finished surface: rotten framing, bad substrates, moisture, questionable plumbing, electrical surprises, floors nowhere close to flat, and the decisions tradesmen have to make when they uncover somebody else’s mess.

When do you fix it? When do you document it and call the GC or homeowner? And when do you stop the job before someone else’s problem becomes your liability?

We also get into a few jobs we’ll never forget — stagnant shower water, structural damage, a mummified animal hanging from a 220 line, and live electrical wires abandoned inside a wall.

The lesson is simple:

The part everybody sees is only as good as the part nobody sees.

ABOUT THE SHOW

The best lessons don't come with instructions.

They come from the job that fought back, the mentor who showed you a better way, and the mistake you never made twice.

Built on decades in the trades, The Old Fashioned Tradesmen is where real jobsite experience meets honest conversation. We talk tile, construction, tools, lessons learned the hard way, the people who taught us better, and the stories that still get told long after the job is done.

MEET THE HOSTS

Three tradesmen.
Plenty of stories.

Nearly a century of combined experience—and just enough hindsight to know where the good stories usually begin.

Kelby

Over 30 Years in Tile, Distribution & Remodeling

Kelby has spent more than three decades in the tile and construction world, with experience spanning installation, remodeling, retail, distribution, manufacturing, and sales. He got his start working construction with his father before finding his way into tile, where the mix of craftsmanship, problem-solving, and artistry kept him in the industry.

His career has included tile contracting, flooring retail, distribution, Schluter Systems, and Stonepeak Ceramics. Along the way, he developed a particular appreciation for custom showers, good design, and the small details that separate “finished” from “finished right.”

Kelby brings a broad industry perspective to The Old Fashioned Tradesmen, along with a healthy amount of sarcasm and a willingness to admit that some of the best lessons usually start with something going wrong. Away from work, he enjoys traveling, history, architecture, and checking out tile and craftsmanship wherever he goes.

Mike

Over 30 Years in Flooring, Estimating & Tile

Mike has spent more than three decades in the flooring industry, starting in a warehouse before moving into carpet and eventually tile. A summer job became a career through several sides of flooring, including Schluter Systems alongside Kelby and Chris.

He works as an estimator and costing manager with Rick Jackson Contracting, handling spreadsheets, numbers, and difficult jobs; he brings problem-solving to complicated projects.

“My boyish good looks and great storytimes.”

— Mike, on what he brings to the show

Outside work, Mike is a dad who enjoys racing, coaching, CrossFit, volleyball, and bourbon.

Chris

Over 30 Years in Tile & Flooring

Chris has spent more than three decades in the tile and flooring industry, getting his start installing tile in Miami in the mid-1990s. Since then, he has built experience from multiple sides of the business, including time with Schluter Systems alongside Kelby and Mike.

He's known for finding solutions when projects get complicated—a useful skill in an industry where the phrase “this should be easy” usually means somebody is about to have a long day. His mix of field knowledge, industry experience, and practical problem-solving is a big part of what he brings to The Old Fashioned Tradesmen.

“ME!”

— Chris, summing up his contribution

When he's not working, Chris likes getting out on his motorcycle whenever he gets the chance.

ON THE BENCH

What we'll talk about.

The Craft

What separates work that merely passes inspection from work you’re proud to put your name on.

Tools, materials, layout, prep, and installation. Old-school techniques, new technology, and the decisions that make a job come together.

The Lessons

Most of the best lessons in the trades were learned after something went wrong.

Callbacks, bad cuts, missed measurements, and problem jobs. The mentors who showed us better, the fixes that worked, and the mistakes worth passing along.

The Stories

Because every jobsite has stories that never make it into the training manual.

The characters, customers, road trips, and pranks. The disasters, the victories, and the people who make the trades worth talking about long after the work is done.

THE TRADESMAN’S POUR

The Tradesman’s Pour

October 2026 · This month’s pick from Kelby

Rye Old Fashioned in a crystal rocks glass with a large ice cube, cherries, and a dried blood-orange slice
Kelby’s Rye Old Fashioned

THE BOTTLE

King’s Family Distillery Ryeconic Whiskey

97.3 proof

Why I Picked It

I’ve always liked a rye Old Fashioned. The peppery character of the rye cuts through the sweetness of the simple syrup and cherries and keeps the drink balanced instead of overly sweet.

King’s Family Distillery is also the kind of producer I like supporting—a smaller distillery making a high-quality whiskey without the footprint of the giant national brands. And Ryeconic makes a really good Old Fashioned.

THE POUR / RECIPE

Kelby’s Rye Old Fashioned

Ingredients

  • 3 oz King’s Family Distillery Ryeconic Whiskey
  • About ¾ oz simple syrup
  • 6 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 Traverse City Whiskey Co. cherries
  • 1 dehydrated blood-orange slice
  • 1 large ice cube

Build

Add the whiskey, simple syrup, and bitters to a rocks glass and stir. Add one large ice cube, drop in two cherries, and finish with a dehydrated blood-orange slice.

Tradesman’s Note

“The rye is the key. That little bit of pepper keeps the sweet stuff in check.”

— Kelby
